Title: On Schubert's problem of Characteristics
Abstract:
In fifteenth problem Hilbert asked for a rigorous foundation of Schubert's enumerative calculus, where the most challenging and durable part is Schubert's problem of characteristics (1870). It is the main theoretical problem of the enumerative geometry in the 19th century, the central topic of the pioneering studies of Severi (1916), van der werden (1930), and Ehresmann (1934). In the course to secure the foundation of intersection theory, Andre Weil (1962) attributed the problem to the determination of the cohomology rings of flag manifolds G/P.
In this talk I will give a overview of the background, content, and resolution of the fifteenth problem. The main result is a combinatorial formula that expresses the Schubert's characteristics by the Cartan numbers of the relevant Lie group G.
