Title: Differential Geometry and Topology in Optimization: Some Recent Advances
Abstract:
David Wayne Dreisigmeyer was born in 1971. He graduated from Juniata College (BS in Pre-law, 1994) and Colorado State University (MS in Mathematics, 1999, and PhD in Electrical Engineering, 2004). He currently works at the United States Census Bureau’s Center for Economic Studies, and was a Federal Data Strategy Fellow,. He is the author of 10 papers. His scientific interests include uses of differential geometry, differential topology and algebra in optimization and pattern analysis.
Biography:
The applications of differential geometry to optimization have been extensively explored over the last few decades. This includes direct search (derivative-free) optimization procedures. Advances in optimization theory and algebra have allowed the recent application of results from differential topology to optimization, as well as extensions and refinements of previous methods. We will examine some of these new results, and what is still required for the theoretical results to be of practical value.
