Title: Indications and Early Outcomes of Stem Cell Transplantation in Management of Incurable Diseases in Children
Abstract:
Stem cells are biological cells that can differentiate into other types of cells and can divide to produce more of the same type of stem cells. Recently, stem cell transplantation is applied to treat many incurable diseases in adults. However, application of stem cell in children is still limited.
The aim of this report is to present indications and early outcomes of stem cell transplantation for incurable diseases in children.
We started to perform stem cell transplantation in children since 2015 at Vinmec hospital of Vietnam for different conditions such as cerebral palsy due to brain oxygen deprivation, cerebral palsy due to neonatal icterus, neurological sequences after drowning, neurological sequences, cerebral palsy after intracranial hemorrhage, autism, bronchopulmonary dysplasia, and biliary atresia. Different sources of stem cell have been used including bone marrow derived mononuclear cells, and umbilical cord tissue mesenchymal stem cells.
Our results demonstrated that stem cell transplantation is safe and effective for different incurable diseases in children.
