Title: Microsoft Excel Implementation of Numerical Algorithms for Nonlinear algebraic or Transcendental Equations
Abstract:
In this talk, we use Microsoft Excel (MS Excel) spreadsheet to implement the well-known classical numerical algorithms, like bisection method, false-position method, Newton’s method, Steffensen’s method, Halley’s method and some hybrid methods, to find a root of the given nonlinear algebraic or transcendental equations. Generally, the applications of various fields of pure and applied sciences and technology, engineering arise in the form non-linear equations f (x) = 0; and many engineers and researchers have been discussed and created several hybrid algorithms to solve nonlinear equations numerically using the well-known classical root finding algorithms. MS Excel spreadsheet/worksheet is commonly used by students, researchers, teachers for several purposes, and it is become powerful software that can be used almost by all fields of engineering, management and science. Using MS Excel spreadsheet, one can makes numerical methods easier to calculate the manual calculations. Excel is part of the MS office suite of software. Many numerical methods are implemented in Matlab; and various books on numerical methods using Matlab, Maple, Mathematica and other software tools are available in the market. Research on hybrid numerical methods (using classical methods) are available with their implementations using Maple, Mathematica, Matlab and other mathematical software tools. However, the software tools are not freely available and costly; moreover some software tools are not user friendly to compute the calculations. In this case, the best alternative choice for student, engineers and teachers is Excel spreadsheets, and this allows us a ready experimentation with numerical methods.
