Title:  Trends and opportunities for the farmers in canola crop production in comparison with conventional crops in District Bahawalnagar
Abstract:
Canola oil is readily available in local markets and is reasonably priced, it is a better option for both residential and business use. Because canola oil is becoming more and more popular in a variety of dishes, it is farmed in many locations. The primary goals of the research are to determine the degree of awareness among canola farmers in Bahawalnagar, the many obstacles and difficulties that canola oil farmers encounter, and the sources of technology transfer and information sharing on canola production technology. The study entitled Trends and opportunities for the farmers in canola crop production in comparison with conventional crops in District Bahawalnagar" was conducted in district Bahawalnagar. The current study was descriptive and survey type in nature. Quantitative as well as qualitative data were used to explore the study results. In first stage from all 5 tehsils, Chishtian, Haroonabad, Bahawalnagar, Minchinabad, Fortabbas tehsil was selected randomly. The said tehsil have 29 UCs and 15 from them are selected randomly. A list of the all registered oilseed growers has been obtained from agriculture extension department in study area. The total numbers of registered farmers are 605 in Dahranwala Markaz tehsil Chishtian. A samples size of 90 respondents of canola growers and 60 respondents of conventional crops has been drawn by using confidence level 95% and confidence interval 7 through www.surveysystem.com. A well prepared and well-designed interview schedule was developed for data collection as research instrument. An interview guideline was prepared for open ended discussion. The data was collected from the selected respondents in study area by using different data collection techniques. Quantitative data was analyzed by using Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) t-test was used to get relationship among compatible variables while qualitative data collection was analyses by using content analysis techniques. It was concluded that About 45.6% of the respondents were in the age category up to 35 years while more than one-third (35.6%) were belong to adults group range from 36-50 years. More than one-tenth (21.1%) respondents were illiterate. About one- fifth (20%) respondents. Among the different agronomic practices Soil management practice was at 1st in rank order according to the weighted score 360 and mean value 4 followed by harvesting and post- harvest handling at 2nd rank order with weighted score 355 and mean value 3.94 and laying between agree to strongly agree at five-point likert scale but tending towards agree. Among different challenges/constraints faced by the canola growers genetically modified organisms (GMO) regulations was at 1st in rank order according to the weighted score 368 and mean value 4.08 followed by environmental regulations at 2nd rank order with weighted score 365 and mean value 4.08 and laying between agree to strongly agree at five-point likert scale but tending towards agree. Environmental Regulations, Market Price Volatility, Droughts, floods, extreme temperatures, or untimely rains, Labor Shortages and Weed Management were the different challenges faced by the growers in the study area. It was recommended that farmer should select canola cultivars with characteristics such as resistance to disease, high potential yield, and tolerance to environmental stressors that are appropriate for your particular area. Growers should employ efficient weed control techniques, such as mechanical weed competition control and the application of pre- and post-emergence herbicides.
